Getting the Deck Right Around a Pool

Pool decks and patios take more abuse than any other part of the backyard: bare feet, splashing chlorinated water, summer heat, winter freeze-thaw and soil that moves underneath. A good pool deck slopes water away from the pool, stays comfortable underfoot, is not slippery when wet and gives you room for chairs, a table and walking space without crowding the edge.

Materials we work with

Broom-finish concrete is the most common and lowest-cost pool deck. Stamped concrete adds pattern and color for a stone or tile look. Pavers are individual units set on a compacted base; they cost more to install but can be lifted and reset if the ground moves. HomeGuide's 2026 figures put poured concrete patios at about $5 to $15 per square foot installed, stamped concrete at $8 to $19 and pavers at $10 to $17. Lighter colors and textured finishes stay cooler and less slick than dark, smooth surfaces.

Clay soil and drainage

Wichita-area clay swells when wet and shrinks during dry stretches, and a deck slab sitting on that soil will move. We remove topsoil and soft material, build and compact a proper base, slope the deck away from the pool and the house, and place control joints so cracks follow straight lines. Downspouts and yard drainage are routed so roof water does not pour onto the deck or soak the soil beside the pool. Pavers on a well-built base handle movement better than one large slab.

Winter and freeze-thaw

With an average freeze window from late October to early April, water that soaks into a deck can freeze and expand. Sealing concrete, keeping joints filled and avoiding de-icing salts on new concrete help it last. Around the pool, the joint between coping and deck needs a flexible sealant so water does not get behind the coping.

Size and layout

A narrow apron around the pool is the cheapest option but leaves no room for furniture. Many homeowners plan a larger patio on the house side for dining and shade, and a narrower walkway around the rest of the pool. We lay out furniture footprints, gate locations and the path from the back door so the deck works the way you use the yard.

Fence and gate placement

Wichita's barrier rules, as commonly summarized, call for pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 60 inches tall with latched gates; MABCD can confirm the current requirement. Where the fence runs, where gates open, and what it attaches to are easier to plan with the deck than after it. We lay out post locations so the fence and deck work together.

Existing pools

If your deck is cracked, heaved or sinking, we can repair, resurface or replace it. HomeGuide lists concrete deck resurfacing at about $3 to $12 per square foot, a lower-cost option when the slab underneath is still sound.

Pool Decks & Patios Questions

How much does a pool deck cost in Wichita?

HomeGuide's 2026 figures put poured concrete at about $5 to $15 per square foot installed, stamped concrete at $8 to $19 and pavers at $10 to $17. Fixr puts a 500-square-foot pool patio at about $2,600 to $4,800. We give a written price after measuring.

Are pavers or concrete better around a pool in Kansas?

Concrete costs less and is easy to keep clean; pavers cost more but can be lifted and reset if clay soil moves. Both need a good base and drainage.

What pool deck surface stays coolest?

Light-colored, textured surfaces stay cooler than dark or smooth ones. Many people choose light broom-finish or stamped concrete or light pavers for that reason.

Why is my pool deck cracking?

Common causes are soil movement under the slab, poor base preparation, missing control joints and water getting under the deck. Clay soils that swell and shrink make all of these worse.
